Altech Batteries (ASX: ATC) has unveiled a compelling case for its Sodium Nickel Chloride (SNC) battery technology as the superior energy storage option for explosive and hazardous environments. Presented in a new product showcase, the company laid out why its SNC batteries outclass conventional technologies when safety, longevity and minimal maintenance are mission critical.
Used for uninterruptable power supply (UPS) in sectors like oil and gas, mining, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals and defence, battery systems in explosive or ATEX zones must adhere to strict safety standards. Altech argues its SNC batteries stand apart from lithium ion, nickel cadmium and lead acid rivals on nearly every front.
The technology, developed in partnership with Fraunhofer IKTS in Germany, eliminates the risks of thermal runaway, fire or explosion. Unlike lithium ion batteries that use flammable electrolytes and are banned in many hazardous zones, SNC batteries use a solid ceramic electrolyte and operate at high temperatures without volatile components. This enables SNC batteries to function safely even when punctured, overcharged or submerged.
On top of safety, Altech’s SNC batteries offer impressive performance metrics:
Over 20 years of float life with minimal capacity loss
3,500 to 5,000 charge cycles with over 80 percent retained capacity
Operating temperature range of minus 20 to 60 degrees Celsius
No need for air conditioning, external housing or regular maintenance
Low self-discharge, enabling long shelf life and reliable backup
Applications include powering emergency lighting, gas detection systems, emergency valves, communications equipment and control systems in explosive environments. Their sealed design, long life span and reduced maintenance requirements translate to lower capital expenditure and operating costs over time.
Importantly, the SNC batteries are certified to rigorous safety standards including UL1973, UL9540A, CE and ISO9001, with ABS and DNV certifications in progress.
Altech has already deployed its SNC batteries in multiple regions including South Africa and is scaling up to meet growing global demand. The company is also working on next generation grid-scale storage products under its CERENERGY brand, with larger cells and modular units aimed at the renewable energy and utility markets.
While lithium ion remains the standard in consumer and electric vehicle sectors, Altech is carving out a niche in industrial and hazardous energy storage where safety and uptime are paramount. Its SNC solution offers a real alternative for critical infrastructure where failure is not an option.
